This is Micmac making fire.They are using ashes from their last fire. The ashes are held in between two shells.This is a job for a woman.She puts the ashes near the wood and tries to get the fire going.

They would bring the fire pouch instead of the bow drill.They would bring the fire pouch because it would be a lot easier to bring around then the bow drill. Some people think that the Micmac just banged rocks together to make a fire but the fire pouch is a lot easier way.
