Snowshoes were extremely helpful to the Micmacs in the winter. Snowshoes are made by bending ash wood into an oval and cutting strips of rawhide. The Micmacs carefully wove and wove their rawhide through the frame of the snowshoe. Sometimes the strips of rawhide were close together and sometimes they weren't. When they were close together it was for carrying heavy loads. When they weren't close together it was for hunting, because the snow woudn't get stuck in between the raw hde and it was lighter. Snowshoes were very, very dependable. Snowshoes were quite difficult to make though. The amazing thing is that some people still use them today. BACK
