In order to travel and to hunt after snowfall, snowshoes were a necessity. They spread the body's weight over a wider surface, so the wearer did not sink deeply into the snow. In some ways they resembled a tennis racquet having a wooden frame and an inside strung with rawhide. Rawhide is the uncured skin of an animal.
